I am King Loki Laufeyson of Asgard. I am God of Mischief and Lies. Currently engaged to my dear Sigyn. I will answer any questions but I cannot guarantee an honest answer.

“Ice cream? Oh, that should be interesting,” she responded as she took Loki’s hand and they began their trip down the hill. “I had heard of it but had not tried it before last night. I’m told there are quite a few different flavours of it, is that true? Have you tried many of them?” She stopped herself, blushing a little. “Forgive me, love, I don’t mean to pelt you with questions, but Midgard has changed so much in only a few centuries, it is fascinating and I know so little about it.” She looked away at the water, deciding not to mention why she had so seldom wished to return to Midgard in over five hundred years.

‘I think there are. I have only tried a few flavours myself and some of those weren’t very nice. My personal flavour I think is either chocolate or lemon sorbet. Contrasting I know but they’re both very nice.’ Loki smiled as they walked out of the little passage they had gone up and into the main row of shops. They waited for a posh car to stop before they crossed the road and made their way towards the boats.

‘I don’t mind questions my love. I enjoy answering them. If you have any about anything I would love to hear them and I will do my best to answer them, depending on if I know the answers or not.’ He smirked as he spotted a van with pictures of ice cream on the side. ‘I believe that is where one can purchase ice cream.’ He looked at the queue and sighed before joining in the end.

Sigyn nodded a little too fast. “Perhaps finding some shade might be a better idea. Or we could walk near the water? I imagine the breeze off the sea will be nicely cool.” She stood up, stretching a little as she did, and held out her hand for Loki’s. Sadly there did not seem to be any beach, but it might be interesting to get a closer look at the mortals’ boats.

I cannot see them sending off their dead to Valhalla in these, she thought with wry amusement. “What do you think, my love? Or do you have another idea?”

‘That sounds wonderful.’ Loki said with a smile, he stood up and held out a hand for Sigyn to take. ‘It may be a bit of a walk but I believe there could be a place to buy ice cream near the boats. Perhaps we could get some if necessary.’

Taking Sigyn’s hand despite the heat they made their way back down the hill, away from the palace and towards the bay, where, the boats looked like floating palaces of their own.

“It was my pleasure, love, believe me,” Sigyn replied with a teasing smile, taking back one arm so she could trail the backs of her fingers affectionately down his cheek. “Are you feeling more comfortable now? Perhaps if we went somewhere cooler?” She released him and moved back to her place on the bench beside him and looked around for a place with some shade, but unfortunately did not see much that was not uncomfortably close to the Midgardians. She herself had been getting a bit overly warm, but in hiding Loki from sight while he cooled himself, Sigyn had been rather nicely cooled off too. It briefly crossed her mind to wonder what it would be nice to touch more of him when he was in his Jotun form, but she immediately pushed the thought away, her cheeks becoming pink as she realized how inappropriate the thought had been. She cleared her throat and waited for Loki’s answer.

‘Much, thank you. That shouldn’t happen again but I know you can help if it does.’ Loki chuckled, looking back out to the view. ‘I think I should be fine, how about you? If you want to move then that’s ok.’

He knew the heat wouldn’t have as much of an effect on Sigyn as it did on him but it seemed to be bothering her slightly. ‘I don’t mind moving if you want to. We will be sitting for a while so we might as well be somewhere cool.’ He smiled and resisted the urge to wrap an arm around his beloved. It was too hot anyway, added body heat would not be a good idea.

Sigyn watched with concern, but the slight tension in her face relaxed into a smile as Loki cooled down, his relief obvious. A smile spread across his face and he turned to bestow his wonderful boyish grin on her, which she automatically started to return until she noticed something and glanced down. the blue of his skin had just become visible through the open collar of his shirt and continued spreading upward. After a moment’s hasty thought, Sigyn leaned in front of him, embraced him and kissed him so that her body and her large hat hid his neck and face from view, her slender arms wrapped around his neck in a way that appeared merely affectionate but also hid the sides of his neck from any of the Midgardians’ view. The contrast was startling, the skin of his neck almost chilly against her arms but his lips still warm as always. She moved a little closer, enjoying both his kiss and the cool of his skin against hers.

Sigyn’s sudden kiss surprised Loki but he returned it willingly before something was brought to his attention. Her arms were hot against his neck than her lips were against his own, he mentally kicked himself before he made the icy feeling vanish. He slowly felt his beloved’s arm’s temperature change from almost too hot for him to bear to a warmth that was almost cool in comparison.

He pulled back, her large hat bashing his head a bit. Smiling sheepishly he spoke. ‘Thank you for that my love.’

“Yes, for a people who seem to have such a black-and-white morality, they can be astonishingly flexible in that morality when it suits their ends.” Sigyn tried to keep most of her scorn out of her voice, but one trait she loathed was hypocrisy, all the more because it was so disturbingly common among the Aesir. She laughed a little, switching subjects to his later comment. “I look forward to hearing those tales, then.”

She looked around at the view thoughtfully. Who would have ever thought the mortals would became capable of such things within the short span of a few centuries? She smoothed down the skirt of her dress out of habit, and rolled her shoulders a little. The sun here was really quite warm, and she frowned and glanced at Loki, wondering if he was coping well with the heat.

“Are you well, my love?” she asked quietly.

Loki was staring off into the distance, frowning a bit when Sigyn asked how he was. He smiled and sat up straighter ‘I’ll cope. It’s just very hot and I can’t really cool down with so many people around us.’ He shifted uncomfortably before he had an idea.

Whenever he had changed, he had always started with his fingers first, but he could see no reason why he couldn’t start somewhere else, his feet perhaps. His shoes and trousers would cover anything up but it would mean he wouldn’t be able to tell how much of his body had turned blue. Thinking about it, the need for a temperature change overrode his worry about being seen, so he concentrated on changing form but starting with his feet.

The almost instant relief of the ice running through his veins made him smile. To an outsider it would appear that he was enjoying a cool breeze but both him and Sigyn knew differently. He turned to smile at her, not paying attention to the fact that the cool feeling was going on a bit too long.

“I believe I may have heard about that incident,” Sigyn replied, her forehead creasing in thought as she tried to remember. “It was some enemy of his, was it not? I am surprised it didn’t happen more often, considering that his former vocation was creating weapons to kill huge numbers of people more accurately and efficiently. There must be an astounding amount of blood on his hands, yet now he is one of the Avengers, the ‘good guys’,” Sigyn smiled sardonically. “If SHIELD can accept a man like that into their team, then they would be rank hypocrites to refuse to believe you can change.” She shook her head and smiled at Loki, trying to shake off her sudden dark mood.

“I did not know you ever frequented casinos, my love. I’m sure you have some stories to tell about them, yes?”

‘Yes he did although he was helping them with his weapons so to them, he gave the impression of being good.’ Loki chuckled darkly ‘Very different to how they perceived me.’ He smiled at Sigyn’s comment about casinos. ‘Yes I do have some very interesting tales, none of loosing and some of winning what I assume is quite a lot of money.’

Looking around he leant back, the warm sun hitting his pale skin. He longed to cool down again but there were too many people around who could notice.

“True, it is quite impressive what the mortals manage to achieve in their vanishingly short lives,” Sigyn agreed. It was odd, she reflected. The view was so different from anything she was accustomed to, be it the controlled splendour of Asgard or the wild beauty of Vanahiemr, yet in a strange way it had its own sort of beauty. “It is lovely, although so… packed. I wonder how the mortals are able to live practically under each other’s feet as they do.” She shook her head a little in wonderment and turned to smile up at Loki. “Have you been to this place in recent centuries? Perhaps you might tell me more about it?”

‘I have, it truly is a fascinating place. It seems that the people who live here are classified as being rich and that it this is luxury. Each year there is a race held here on the roads that is part of a larger competition which Thor became very interested in when it started although when the death toll stopped then he lost interest. If I remember Tony Stark, one of the Avengers, nearly died during this race although that had nothing to do with the cars.’ Loki chuckled darkly but stopped himself, he was meant to be good now. ‘There are also many casinos that I have visited in the past and have gained a lot of money from but they have lost their charm for me I’m afraid.’ He smiled and looked over the city. ‘What else do you wish to know?’

“Oh good,” she smiled in relief, watching with interest as his hand changed to blue and that back to his normal pale pallor. “That will no doubt be very useful if we ever visit Muspellsheimr,” she observed whimsically.

“A prince, hmm?” Sigyn laughed. “Monarchies are becoming rarer on Midgard than they used to be,” she observed. “Especially in the West. Even the countries that do still have royalty tend to have elected officials as well. It is rather a shame, there is much to be said for rulers who were trailed from birth to lead. Yet I suppose electing officials has some merits as well. Hmm…” she thought about it and then blushed lightly when she realized she was rambling. “Apologies, my love, I am merely fascinated by how mortal society has changed.”

She gazed up the hill at the huge white building coming into view. “Well, it is a respectable size, at least. I had wondered if mortals had completely forgotten how to build a proper palace.”

‘Yes I was quite impressed by it too but it’s nothing compared to Asgard.’ He smiled as they made their way up to the top of the hill. ‘Although the views are quite stunning.’ He motioned towards a small wall, over which you could see the mountains as they reached the deep cyan of the sea. The boats in the harbour varied from small yachts to large cruise ships and they stood out in comparison with the buildings on the bay.

He smiled and took a bench from which you could see the view. ‘Beautiful isn’t it.’

“Yes indeed,” Sigyn said, brightening at that idea. “Tell me more about this square?” she requested as they walked back out to the sidewalk. It really was quite bright, Sigyn thought, glad she had thought of the hat to shade her face. The thought of Loki’s biological origin crossed her mind and she looked up at him worriedly. “It is not too hot for you, is it, love?”

‘I’m fine, I can cool myself down if necessary’ He said with a smile, his fingers turning blue to illustrate the point. The cool feeling running through his veins was nice, but he stopped it before his whole body could change colour. ‘Helpful side effect’ He said with a smirk.

‘The square isn’t too far away from here but it’s up a little bit of a hill. It’s in front of the palace which, funnily enough is ruled by a Prince instead of a King. There’s a large area of grass that we could sit on, or instead there are benches from which you can see the rest of the city. We can decide where to go when we get there.’

He took Sigyn’s arm as they made their way around the corner and up the slow incline to the palace.
